THE UPLIFT CENTER – EMPOWERING THE DEPENDENT

by Aleefa Haque

The project is a community centre for those physically impaired, and children aged 5-14 years. Through a sequence of freeing and fun activities, such as swimming and cooking, the building takes the user on a spatial journey. Entering from the elevator platform and ascending through each floor, the programme increases in the sense of independency required by the visitors. To celebrate the user’s bravery and confidence of accomplishing the activities, visitors take the slide from the floor of the swimming straight down to the ground where awaiting parents or guardians can greet them. The Uplift Centre uplifts physically users into the space, and empowers them through its character, structure, and programmatic designs for them to gain confidence and become independent.
