GO ABOVE AND BEYOND

by Julia Knapek

The main focus lies on creating a ‘safe space’ for people who experience mental health problems and seek help. To go above and beyond means to do more or better which directly corresponds to the mental condition of potential visitors but also literally suggests to leave the hustle and bustle of the market and go beyond the building. Following the main aim of this term’s brief which is to ‘’use play as a means to improve things for individuals and/or communities’’, CALM charity and the idea of bird therapy was brought into the site. An internal space including reception, therapy studios and bird observatory, invites anyone in need to take advantage of professional mental support, as well as to experience calming effect offered by bird-watching. A recycled rubber aviary located on the roof of the building creates an external, playful environment for members of the public who will be able to observe birds, climb rubber mesh structures, rest on suspended hammocks and take some fresh air. The renovation of this space has the objective of uniting people where they have a chance to interact with each other, which in itself has a therapeutic effect.
