ACTIVE NEIGHBOURHOOD WALK

by Marie Kaune

The project explores the opportunities of urban regeneration along waterways as an instrument to raise awareness for the changing climate and to improve public health, particularly in light of the recent coronavirus pandemic. Increasing accessibility around rivers and canals can enhance biodiversity and the interaction of nature and cities, improve mental health and wellbeing and furthermore, have a positive impact on social and health inequalities of communities. The concept of an active neighbourhood walk will not only consider local community health but will give opportunities to incorporate educational and creative elements to stimulate mindfulness about our environment and surroundings. Following a transformative approach of climate urbanism, the project aims to engage the community to create change on a regional scale with the help of local knowledge and governance, resulting in an innovative small-scale concept that can be reused as an innovative example for other urban waterways.
