THE MOSS NEIGHBOURHOOD

by Dominika Sokalska

‘The Moss Neighbourhood’ project addresses air pollution by integrating a vertical farm and local moss ecology, known for air-purifying properties, into architecture with elements of cultural facilities, start-up businesses and a residential area. By stacking these elements, the proposal celebrates the natural environment in the very heart of the city, making for local microclimates on various scales. Its social-ecological design aims to create site developments enhancing the potential of a place to support sustainable communities by incorporating the benefits of a moss ecosystem. The overall proposal’s structural strategy and design deliver new, specific architectural principles which rethink the relationship of humans and nature and integrate a complex local moss ecosystem to the urban environment of the city.
