WORMWOOD HEALTH CO-OPERATIVE

by William Lawton

Working collaboratively in a group of four our design brief was to re-imagine Wormwood Scrubs Prison for a new community of elderly and student residents. Our masterplan concept was to open up the site to the adjacent scrub park land and wider area of West London. As a group we developed a series of subtraction and addition strategies that were applied to the existing prison buildings, wall and courtyard spaces. The masterplan includes: one to three bedroom shared housing units for the students and elderly residents, gardens and allotments, a complementary health centre, primary school and a medical research institute. My role in the group was to develop the design for a residential strategy using a grid architectural language which was developed alongside strategic demolition cuts and openings applied to the existing cell block structure.
