RECLAIMING CHORA: RESPONDING TO THE DESPONDENT PAST

by Eadan Filbrandt

The tradition of the Guilds is integral to the site of Little Britain. While this has contributed to its rich history, the role of women has largely been sidelined. Through a Feminist reading of Derrida’s Platonic Chora, the proposal aims to reinstate the role of women in these skills, through spaces conducive to collaborative and individual work that facilitate experimentation and creation. The Silversmith’s Studiolo, Materials Library and Banqueting Hall are designed with timber modules that optimise the development of jointing techniques. This enables an increase in complexity and scale, while still maintaining a sense of intimacy. Crucially the basic exoskeleton structure provides internal flexibility to allow for the exchange of ideas and skills, creating new concepts of how space is conceived and used.
