The Unconventional Journey School challenges traditional ideas of education, proposing a learning landscape to support freedom of movement, mixing of age groups and self-discovery. The initial concept stems from background reading of De-schooling Society by Ivan Illich and How Children Learn by John Holt; they identify schools as institutions that strip children of all tools they learned previously. The classrooms are located to the North of the site and off the ground floor thus allowing balanced light from north and south. Breakout rooms for quiet and calm are situated on the ground floor. In relation to the community, the school offers a small café point facing the Archbishop park, a multi-purpose hall that can be adapted for the community events during half-term breaks and a small ‘front fence’ gallery for children's own work.
