THE WATERFRONT CITY

by Babita Cooper

Ebbsfleet is founded on the celebration of it’s water, and The Waterfront City is a civic institution that embodies this. Situated at the mouth of the River Ebbsfleet, the institution is a celebration of Ebbsfleet’s natural wonders and the waterfronts rich industrial history, where the topography of surrounding white cliffs are a symbol of the historic cement industry. Mimicking a model village, The Waterfront City is a form of co-production between the workers, students and residents of Ebbsfleet. Using Ebbsfleet’s history to re-imagine its future, the waterfront will become a place that preserves the lime and cement manufacturing industry whilst also be opened up to recreational and leisure activities, allowing the people of Ebbsfleet to reclaim their water.
