THE MOVEMENT OF LIGHT IN SPACE
by Sarah El-abed
James Turrell is known for his work within the light and space movement. Much of Turrell’s career has been devoted to a still unfinished work, known as the Roden Crater. His work isn’t about recording light, but about the physical presence of light and greatly inspired by a phrase his late grandmother said at a service “Go inside and greet the light.” The aim of this proposal revolves around an atrium with a roof light, based in the centre of the building, differing in size on each floor. This allows spaces to be transformed during different times of the day depending on the quality of light coming in through the roof.
