The aim of the project is to explore the making process of traditional handmade fans and focus on the play ‘The Shrine in the Fields by Zeami’ to explore the classical Japanese performance of Noh Theatre which revolves around music, dance and drama. The two main ideas driving the building are the complex internal organisation of the retail fan shop, fan making workshop and performances stages, and the expression of the external building tectonics. The external structure is made out of timber battens which uses gradation as a visual technique to transition from one colour hue to another capturing natural light in the façade and draws people in the building. The curved glass acts as window displays and distorted views of the spaces within and the city beyond.
